WORDS TO LIVE BY

In an op-ed piece in the paper(New York Times), Turkish writer Mustafa Akyol calls on the Muslim world to ease its concept of blasphemy.
"Rage is a sign of nothing but immaturity," he says. "The power of any faith comes not from its coercion of critics and dissenters. It comes from the moral integrity and the intellectual strength of its believers."

KEEP YOUR MICROBES TO YOURSELF

The microbes in an average human body can weigh as much as 3#, or about the same as a human brain. They outnumber your body cells by 10-to-1.
(Don’t you feel itchy all over…you know you do.)

HEY, I CAN SEE MY HOUSE FROM HERE!

So how cool is this? Picture from the ISS of Florida; with parts of Ga, Miss, Ala, La.
The big streak of light across the middle is the I-4 corridor, Tampa to Orlando.
I live just about in the middle between the two.

FROM THE 'SMALL WORLD' DEPARTMENT

So the wife & I were at Rooms To Go buying a bed for our Grandson  for when he sleeps over; he’s decided he’s too big to sleep on a mattress on the floor. The lady at RTG was very helpful and chatty, and after we had completed the purchase she asked us where we from (almost everybody in Florida is from somewhere else).
We’re originally from Connecticut, and after telling her she said that she was from Milford CT, which is about 10 miles from where we lived. But the kicker was that her husband was a Jai Alai player who played at the Jai Alai fronton on Old Gate Lane in Milford…which was right next door to the Owens-Illinois plant where I worked!  Freaky!
Especially since we’ve been here 26 years and she’d been here about 20 (we moved after the O-I plant closed down; they moved after the Jai Alai closed). Interestingly the location of the Jai Alai is now a Lowe’s and a Hilton Garden Inn. The O-I plant is still there as of now, deserted and looking the worse for wear as
you can see it on Google Maps. And looking at it today, part of the roof by the raw material storage tanks has collapsed, which was near to where the stockroom (which I ran) was located.
What a great job I had, pretty much left alone to do my job, which included purchasing as well as supervising, not to mention going to Bobby Valentine’s Sports Bar for lunch, which was across the street. The place is still there, but not owned by Bobby Valentine any longer.
Well, enough of traveling down Old Gate(memory)Lane for now, time to move along…

SAY WHAT?!

Heard an ad on the radio for a funeral home the other day; the tag line was “Experience the difference.”
How the hell do you experience the difference (whatever it may be) without actually dying? And wouldn’t it be a little late to comparison shop by then?
I’m just saying…

APOCALYPSE...NOW?

"Apocalypse Now: What does the threat bring out in you?

Someone asked, "Do you really believe we're headed for an apocalypse?"

Dude! The apocalypse is already here!
Sci-fi writer William Gibson said the future arrives at different speeds. Same is true of the end that could throw us backward a hundred years.

I look around and I see the power of antibiotics fading as the bugs come back stronger. There's an excellent chance we won't be able to have the surgeries we have now because our antibiotics will no longer work. Do you want to go back to pre-1928 medicine? Of course, not. Nobody wants to die of a sore throat, a bladder infection or appendicitis. But that is our present course.

I see fracking causing earthquakes and flammable water in kitchen sinks.

I see perma-war.

Most disturbing, I see an unwillingness to change, anti-science and anti-intellectualism.

Worst? I see a lack of compassion.
Citizens are in big trouble on Spaceship Earth and a lot of people, speaking from fear and ignorance, seem determined to be dicks about it." by Robert Chazz  Chute

Found the above on a blog post from a writer of zombie apocalypse books & suspense fiction. Struck me as very true, and perhaps scarier than all the horror fiction & movies I've read or watched over the last 50 years.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a study by Caltech & UCLA there is one nerve cell in the human brain that reacts to pictures of Jennifer Aniston, and only Jennifer Aniston. There is another one that responds to pictures of Halle Berry - even in her Catwoman mask!
Isn't that just crazy; just think, millions of nerve cells and each one responding to just one person...

(from Feb.2014 National Geographic)

(those 2 neurons are working overtime now, aren't they?

DID YOU EVER NOTICE?

When your parents told you that “I’m telling you for the last time…”,
it rarely was…

Back in the spanking days they always told you that ”This will hurt me more than it will you”,
but it never did…

But if they told you “You’ll always be my little boy (or girl)”,
you pretty much were…

(It’s been 4 years today…still miss you Mom)

Cool, isn't it?

WHO KNEW?

phillumenist:

‘A person who collects match-related items, like matchbox labels, matchboxes, matchbooks, or matchbook covers.’

Oddly enough, for many years I collected matchbooks; back when smoking wasn’t verboten it was easy to find them pretty much everywhere – hell, our wedding info was written on matchbooks from the place Phyl and I met way back when and we put them with the place settings at our wedding reception! Still have the matchbooks somewhere, had a few thousand and they’re in the garage; the point being I never knew there was a name for collecting them, go figure…

NOW WE KNOW 'GANGNAM STYLE'

Patients' names were written on the bones

A plastic surgery clinic in Seoul's chic Gangnam district has been fined for displaying a decorative tower made of bone removed from patients' chins, it appears.

TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN

“Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is THE BEST.”

Frank Zappa
