DRUGS (NOT HUGS)

100 years ago, narcotics passed from country to country with minimal interference from the authorities. That all changed with the 1912 International Opium Convention, which committed countries to stopping the trade in opium, morphine and cocaine.

(Working well so far, isn't it...)

A MATTER OF TIME

"A bid to move the UK's clocks forward by an hour for a three-year trial period fails after the legislation ran out of time in the Commons."

 (from BBConline)

Guess they should have moved the clocks back to give themselves more…

RIP: ETTA JAMES

1938 - Jan.20, 2012: R&B singer who was perhaps best known for her song "At Last" which apparently is played at many weddings these days, including my daughter's. Which is where I heard it for the first time (4-1/2 years ago!).
Coincidentally, she was discovered by Johnny Otis ("Willie & the Hand-Jive") who died 3 days ago.

RIP: JIMMY CASTOR

1947 - Jan.16, 2012: Famous in the 70s for the song 'Troglodyte' which introduced the world to Bertha Butt of the Butt sisters. Sorta tacky now, but it had a great beat and was quite funny back in the day:
"Troglodyte"
(As recorded by Jimmy Castor Bunch) JIMMY CASTOR BUNCH What we're gonna do right here is go back Way back into time When the only people that existed were Troglodytes Cave men, cave woman, Neanderthal, Troglodytes Imagine the average cave man at home Listening to his stereo Sometimes he'd get up and dance He'd move something like this "dance dance" He'd get tired of dancing alone and look in the mirror And say "gotta find a woman" "Gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman" Then he'd go down to the lake where all the girls Would be swimming or washing clothes or something And he'd grab one by the hair You can't do that today fellas 'Cause it might come off You have a hand full of hair And she'd be swimming away from you This was a big woman, big Her name was Bertha, Bertha Butt -- one of the Butt sisters She looked down on him And started to crush him Then she began to play him He looked up at her and said "sock it to me" "Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me" She looked down on him And said "I'll sock it to you daddy" And you know what he said He started it all way back then I ain't gonna lie to you He said "right on, right on" Hot pants, hot pants Uh uh uh. The maker of Twinkies, the well-known cream filled sponge cake, files for bankruptcy protection in the US, citing the economic downturn."

Now this is a terrible thing, since Twinkies have been one of my favorite snack foods since I was little. Remember a few years back they had the banana creme filled ones...? Even better! And of course, that fair food favorite - deep-fried Twinkies (especially dipped in a strawberry batter...oh, I"m starting to drool...

So c'mon, skip your diet at least one day a week and have twinkies for lunch!! (or breakfast or dinner (or both))

RIP: BOB WESTON

1947 - Jan. 3 2012:
Guitar player for Fleetwood Mac pre-Buckingham/Nicks; played on the 2 albums shown.
If you've never listened to the Mac pre-B/N, these 2 albums Bob played on would be a good place to start (and then work your way back to the beginning.)

Rock on, Bob, rock on...
