MOVIE TITLE

I'm thinking of a movie about a cult who believes the world is going to end soon and finds solace in a Trinidad music genre.

I call it…Apocalypso

CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE

Last night went to see 'Classic Albums Live' perform Led Zeppelin II, start to finish ("note for note, cut for cut") as they say, at the Lakeland Center. An excellent show (as usual), probably second only to the Who's Next we saw a few years back. And it's not easy to sing Zeppelin lyrics and make them sound Plant-like, but the singer last night was excellent.

If you ever get a chance to see any of these shows, it's always a great experience. And last night was even more of an experience than usual. During the second half of the show, when the band came back from their break & played assorted Zep songs, a guy & a good-looking girl came down to the front of the theater and she climbed up on his shoulders…and then proceeded to take off her (bra-less) shirt!

Gotta say, that was the only time I was sorry I don't own a cell phone with a camera!

SEAN BEAN

A fine actor, was terrific in Game of Thrones, interesting in TV's Missing, but the question is this…

Name is spelled Sean Bean

pronounced Shawn Been…

Why not Shawn Bawn…

or Seen Been…

I'm just curious…

RIP: VICTOR SPINETTI

9/02/29 - 6/18/12: Welsh comic actor who will always be remembered to me as the 'mad scientist' in The Beatles 'Help!'. He was also in A Hard Day's Night & Magical Mystery Tour, along with the English gangster movie 'The Krays'. Check out wikipedia for other movies he was in, along with other highlights of his career. wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Spinetti

But he'll always be the mad scientist to me...

MORE BEER! LESS FOOD!

Here’s an interesting one, if I’m reading it correctly. A new study published in the journal Cell Metabolism with the inscrutable title The NAD+ Precursor Nicotinamide Riboside Enhances Oxidative Metabolism and Protects against High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesityappears to suggest that beer (and milk) contain a molecule that helps fight against weight-gain, especially in high-fat diets. The wonder molecule is known as nicotinamide riboside, or NR. Here’s the abstract. See if you can get through it without your head spinning:
As NAD+ is a rate-limiting cosubstrate for the sirtuin enzymes, its modulation is emerging as a valuable tool to regulate sirtuin function and, consequently, oxidative metabolism. In line with this premise, decreased activity of PARP-1 or CD38—both NAD+ consumers—increases NAD+ bioavailability, resulting in SIRT1 activation and protection against metabolic disease. Here we evaluated whether similar effects could be achieved by increasing the supply of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a recently described natural NAD+ precursor with the ability to increase NAD+ levels, Sir2-dependent gene silencing, and replicative life span in yeast. We show that NR supplementation in mammalian cells and mouse tissues increases NAD+ levels and activates SIRT1 and SIRT3, culminating in enhanced oxidative metabolism and protection against high-fat diet-induced metabolic abnormalities. Consequently, our results indicate that the natural vitamin NR could be used as a nutritional supplement to ameliorate metabolic and age-related disorders characterized by defective mitochondrial function.
A mouthful, to be sure, but Jenny Hope, at the UK’s Daily Mail, who presumably had access to the full text, valiantly makes more sense of it in The miracle molecule: Hidden vitamin found in BEER and MILK can make you stronger, slimmer and healthier, and the story starts out very promisingly:
If you were planning on having a quick pint tonight, then this will be welcome news.
Beer may contain a vitamin which can fight obesity and improve muscle strength, scientists claim.
The ‘miracle molecule’, which has been found in milk and may also be present in beer and some foods, has no side effects and could even lengthen lifespan, they say.

BEATING THE DEAD HORSE

TALLAHASSEE --
A judge is holding a hearing today on a ballot challenge alleging President Barack Obama is not a 'natural born citizen.'
The plaintiff represented by conservative legal activist Larry Klayman questions Obama's birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii.
It also argues that even if Obama was born in the United States he still is not a natural citizen because his father was a foreign national.
The suit describes plaintiff Michael Voeltz, as being a registered Democrat.

(Or possibly a registered nutcase...)
Seriously, this has been going on for 4+ years, and they still can't give it up?
As my Dad used to say: "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit" I guess that's the new motto of the Republican Party...

MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING I ATE

I don't usually remember dreams after I wake up; even vivid ones fade quickly upon awakening. However, I woke up some time this morning and still have this one stuck in my brain...
For some reason, at work we hired 200 temporaries, not sure why. Of course, there's no room to fit 200 people in the place I work. But we dressed them in red shirts so we'd remember they were temps, and kept rearranging the racks in the warehouse trying to put them(the temps) somewhere. And apparently Fred's wife now works for us too, though she wasn't a temp.
Then I woke up...

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THIS!!!

MISSING: ONE BEER TRAILER WITH 16 TAPS
Greenville County deputies in North Carolina said they are looking for the person who stole a 14-foot beer trailer from Thomas Creek Brewery. Owner Tom Davis said the skid marks and chop blocks are all that are left of his trailer. He said the marks were made when the thief tried to drive off with
the trailer while the blocks were still under the tires. "It's a
one-of-a-kind trailer," Davis said. "It was handmade, originally for Miller." Davis said the trailer was used to haul and serve his business' beer at events. "You can run 16 taps on it - eight on each side," Davis said. "It's fully refrigerated and fully self-contained. It will be sorely missed." Davis said the trailer was insured, but it's the uniqueness of the towable tank
that has him wanting to get it back. "If it showed back up tomorrow morning, and it was in the same shape as it left, I would probably leave it at that,"
Davis said. At latest report, the trailer was still missing.

However, if you find it; be sure to let me know...

RIP: BOB WELCH

8/31/45 - 6/07/12 - Took his own life today, what a shame. Bob was pretty much the male voice of Fleetwood Mac from 1971 - 1974; one of their best known songs from the era is Hypnotized ("Seems like a dream, got me hypnotized...") And of course, my favorite "Bermuda Triangle".

I guess you've heard about the Bermuda triangle

There's something going on
Nobody seems to know just what it is

And the airforce won't let on

It might be hole down in the ocean
Yeah or a fog that won't let go
It might be some crazy people talking
Or somebody that we ought to know
Down in Bermuda, the pale blue sea
Way down in the triangle, it's easy to believe
Now here's one
You see strange shapes in moonlight
And shadows in the night
They said that wingtip seemed to brush their faces
And strangers stole their sight
Way down in the triangle
Where the sea was smooth as glass
Giving you one answer to a question
That you never thought you'd ask
Ah down in Bermuda, in the pale blue sea
Way down in Bermuda, yeah it's easy to believe
Down in the triangle, it's easy to believe
They came from Galveston
They came from New Orleans
And then from Bloomington, and Delaware
The used St. Petersburg, they came from Tampa
And then from Mexico, it doesn't matter where
They all completely share,
All of those ships and planes,
A great big mystery that cannot be explained,
Down in Bermuda, in the pale blue sea
Your feeling safe in your harbour
And everything seems certain
Right next to Palm Beach and Key Biscane
Behind a velvet curtain
But then the moon goes grey with worry
And the sea turns a pale white
You better believe something strange is going on tonight
Down in Bermuda, ah, the pale blue sea
Bermuda Triangle, yeah, it's easy to believe
Down in the Triangle, it's easy to believe
They came from Galveston
They came from New Orleans
And then from Bloomington, and Delaware
Bermuda, the pale blue sea

And after he left the band, he put out this album. I got a vinyl copy of this at a club in New Haven where Phl and I went for New Year's Eve one year, and everyone got a gift at the door, this was mine and what a great album it was.

So sorry that Bob felt the need to end his life, always hoped in the back of my mind he'd put out some new music and tour around here someday.
 Rock on Bob, rock on...

RIP: RAY BRADBURY

June 5, 2012 at the age of 91: A true talent in the field of (not) science-fiction, a term he didn't use for his books. But definitely almost everyone of my generation grew up reading at one time or another. Fahrenheit 451 (which I believe was my first, probably in the edition below), Something Wicked This Way Comes, and of course The Martian Chronicles. And there were many more that I can't even remember.
But 100 years, perhaps 200 years, Ray will be among a handful of 20th century SF writers(Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Harlan Ellison) that will still be available in however they read books in the future (neural implants, perhaps?).

I'M SPEECHLESS...EXCEPT I'M NOT

Saw a commercial on TV for 'Secret Millionaire'; shot of lady who just received a check - saying  "I'm speechless".
Actually saying "I'm speechless", doesn't that negate being speechless?
