IN MEMORIUM

To Michael Jackson, the Beer Hunter, who passed on to the great alehouse in the sky five years ago today.
So raise a glass and toast his memory...

161 WORD NAME!

'A woman from Hartlepool has a new 161-word name after changing it by Deed Poll.
Dawn McManus, 41, promised to change her name to encourage fundraising for her charity, Red Dreams, which was set up after the death of her son.
Tina Clough, spokesperson for The Legal Deed Poll Service, said: "We have processed a number of crazy name changes to date, but this is the longest one on record."
Ms Dreams said she did not know how the new name would fit on her passport or bank card but hoped she would be allowed to use initials or an abbreviated version.
The former Mrs McManus is now called :
"Red Wacky League Antlez Broke the Stereo Neon Tide Bring Back Honesty Coalition Feedback Hand of Aces Keep Going Captain Let's Pretend Lost State of Dance Paper Taxis Lunar Road Up Down Strange All and I Neon Sheep Eve Hornby Faye Bradley AJ Wilde Michael Rice Dion Watts Matthew Appleyard John Ashurst Lauren Swales Zoe Angus Jaspreet Singh Emma Matthews Nicola Brown Leanne Pickering Victoria Davies Rachel Burnside Gil Parker Freya Watson Alisha Watts James Pearson Jacob Sotheran Darley Beth Lowery Jasmine Hewitt Chloe Gibson Molly Farquhar Lewis Murphy Abbie Coulson Nick Davies Harvey Parker Kyran Williamson Michael Anderson Bethany Murray Sophie Hamilton Amy Wilkins Emma Simpson Liam Wales Jacob Bartram Alex Hooks Rebecca Miller Caitlin Miller Sean McCloskey Dominic Parker Abbey Sharpe Elena Larkin Rebecca Simpson Nick Dixon Abbie Farrelly Liam Grieves Casey Smith Liam Downing Ben Wignall Elizabeth Hann Danielle Walker Lauren Glen James Johnson Ben Ervine Kate Burton James Hudson Daniel Mayes Matthew Kitching Josh Bennett Evolution Dreams."'

Don't know why she didn't just go with...
"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"
(Even though the sound of it is really quite atrocious)

WORKIN' IN A COAL MINE

'Scores of miners in Sardinia have barricaded themselves deep underground in Italy's only coal mine, amid fears that it may be shut down.'
(From BBCOnline)

Well,I'm sure they wouldn't think of just locking the main entrance and leaving the miners down there, taking care of both problems at once, now would they?
(I'm just saying...)

TROPICAL STORM ISAAC

Having passed us by, after much foofaraw...I give you the Isaac damage picture...

TOMORROW IS GOOD ENOUGH...

There is an article on BBCOnline headed ‘Why do we procrastinate so much?’ but I’ll read it later and let you know what it says…

RIP: NEIL ARMSTRONG

1930 - AUG.25,2012:

First man on the moon, pretty freakin’ incredible! I remember at the time (7/20/69) I was working at Caldor Dept. Store in Norwalk CT. Back then, the TVs were all able to pick up whatever channel was available, not all showing the same TV show as they do now. However, on that day, we turned all the TVs to whatever stations were covering it live, and pretty much everyone in the store, employees and customers stood in the TV dept and watched Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.
 What a moment!
To me, that was probably the one defining moment of all the years of space exploration, and will probably not be topped until a man steps on the surface of Mars…

FRANKENSTEIN: LOST SOULS

By Dean Koontz

‘The clock in the upper oven read 2:14, and the clock in the lower oven read 2:11, as if time flowed more languidly nearer the floor than nearer the ceiling.’

‘The way the country was going, the golden years would be years of iron and rust for most people’

‘Michael complained that if the world ended, they wouldn’t know about it until they ran out of milk and had to drive to a store in town. A front-row seat to Armageddon was preferable to the humiliation of being the last to get the news.’

PABST BLUE RIBBON BEER

Having had actually drank this beer back in the 70s when it was originally still popular and brewed by Pabst, I found this interesting fact (?) somewhere I now no longer remember:

'Pabst Blue Ribbon blending 33 different (not that different, obviously) beers to create PBR. Or as they put it, “33 Fine Brews Blended into One Great Beer.” Apparently it’s the blending that gives it “that swell flavor.”'

Swell, remember when things were swell? I do...

RIP: SCOTT McKENZIE

1939 - August 18, 2012:
The very epitome of a 'one-hit wonder' but what a one hit he had...San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair); the 1967 song that was the San Francisico hippy song, for those of use not old enough to go there and be one. Perhaps it runied the term and lifestyle for the real hippies, but nonetheless...
it gave the rest of us something to dream about, and perhaps changed our lives from how it may have turned out...
Rock on, Scott (not his real name - the McKenzie came from John Phillip's daughter McKenzie), rock on...

GORDON

Here's a tracking map of Tropical storm (soon to be a huuricane) Gordon. Notice where it is...that's right, starting in the center of the Atlantic at about the latitude of Charlotte, North Carolina it's movin East towards Northern Africa. Now, I;m fairly certain (being as I live in the hurricane state (Florida) that they usually start off the coast of Central to Southern Africa and move towards us.

Seems to me, another sign of climate change (& not the hand of God showering wrath on the gays, or non-Christians, or whatever...)

SAY WHAT?!

The judge in a high profile US patent trial involving Apple and Samsung has said the iPhone maker's lawyer must be on drugs if he thought she would accept his list of potential witnesses.
William Lee had named 22 people he wanted to rebut testimony given by Samsung's choice of experts.
"Unless you're smoking crack you know these witnesses aren't going to be called" said Judge Lucy Koh.
Mr Lee replied: "Your honour, I'm not smoking crack. I can promise you that."

(Of course, he never said what he was on!)

BEER #825

Zhigulevskoye

Which is really nothing special, a Russian Lager, but at one time it was the only Russian beer that was available - even in Russia! Originally brewed starting in 1881 as 'Viennese Beer' but the name was changed in 1934 as being too bourgeois. There were once 700 breweries in the USSR making this beer.
Interestingly, after trying the beer, a few months later I was reading The Russia House by John LeCarre the spy novelist, published in 1989, and they actually mentioned this beer by name.

FRANKENSTEIN: CITY OF NIGHT

By Dean Koontz:
‘Godot, on the other hand, was hospitable. He held out his right hand and said, ”Any friend to Aubrey, he a friend to me, ‘specially when he come with cash money.”
Shaking the offered hand, Michael said, “I expected we’d have to wait for you Mr Godot, not the other way around.”’

KEITH MOON: OLYMPIC GHOST DRUMMER

Apparently, the Olympic Games organising committee for the 2012 London games invited Keith Moon, late drummer for The Who to be a participant during the closing ceremonies (tonight) of the 2012 London Olympics. Unfortunately, Keith will be unable to attend as he has been dead since 1978!
 Way to go committee!!
Though it would be kinda cool if Keith's ghost showed up to play, wouldn't it now?

CZECH BEER(CAPS)

Don't remember where, but found this great picture online quite a while back. It's actually a map of the Czech Republic (where my son-in-law is from) made from Czech beer bottle-caps. Pretty cool, and it must have been fun to drink all those beers.

E-BOOK FESTIVAL CANCELLED

A literary festival promoting e-books and self-publishing
ended early after failing to attract enough visitors.

Kidwell-e Festival was expecting 25,000 people at Ffos Las
racecourse in Carmarthenshire last weekend, but fewer
than 100 showed up.
Organisers said the start of the Olympics and the location
 could have deterred visitors.
(Or perhaps they were all at home reading
their Kindles & Nooks!)
(from BBCOnline)

UHHH>>>LYMPICS?

2 takes on the Olympics:
Cheating at badminton…really…when did badminton become an Olympic sport? Used to play that in grammar school…

Women’s beach volleyball…really…what’s the point of flat-chested women playing beach volleyball…?

RIP: GORE VIDAL

1925 - 7/21/12:
Gore Vidal... on US politicians
"The United States was founded by the brightest people in the country - and we haven't seen them since."
On the US electorate
"Half of the American people have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half."
